With our working hours, busy life schedules, some becoming parents or have kids.
Do you feel life is just so damn fast?
We were all so young still in school playing around.
And in a blink of an eye, we are all adults, working, starting a family.
And very soon, another blink of an eye, we will become old people soon.
How do you look about this?
I feel kind of afraid, like is life really just like this? Flying by so fast till the day I die?

2021.12.03 14:17 Castinator98 Starting my Accutane journey

4 days ago I officially started taking 80mg (2 40mg pills). I’ve been hesitant to doing so because of the short term and long term side effects. After seeing this forum and talking to people who took it, I decided to say f it and start taking it. I’m hopeful of my skin future but a bit concern about the side effects. Does anyone know what supplement are good to take while on it? What foods to eat before? And what helps with the mostly known side effects? anything I should know? This forum really encouraged me and makes me feel that I am not alone on the battle against acne. I love you guys!

2021.12.03 14:17 ReadsLikeBadFiction The Empyreus

~2377 Anno Domini~
The destination was Triton Research Base. It wasn't the furthest out I had flown—once went out past the Plutonian Span even—so Neptune didn't worry me too much. Nevertheless, the further out in The Black you went the lonelier things got. I was lucky enough to pass by one of the Yuga stations on my way out of the Jovian Span to refuel at least, but those folks had been the last ones I saw, and you know Jovians, they ain't a very warm people.
Another day passed, another day to came. The Kronian Span was always sobering on those long trips. It was the first span you hit where you really noticed the lack of people. That feeling must've been how reclaimers in the 22nd century felt about The Asts. Funny how things end up.
But I suppose I had come to welcome the silence. It wasn't too bad bein' stranded out in the lonesome stretches so long as you didn't let yourself go mad. I'd heard too many stories of folks gettin' staticky, losing their wits out in the depths, never coming back. Usually they're found by reclaimers, and on occasion there's a notebook or an audio log.
Terrifying stuff, I tell you what.
As far as I could tell though, my wits were still about me. I made sure not to touch any of that sersadin poison all my colleagues had been huffing. You'd think after a century plus of advertising campaigns spouting the health defects of the stuff, folks would stop taking it. Yet, they didn't, and the ones that used it the hardest were more often than not the ones who up and went mad.
But my wits were still there.
I wasn't gone. Not yet.
Alas, everything was so empty. At least with the nav-data in my ship and the lack of people, I could take a nap without worry. And honestly, a nap didn't sound too bad.
But it couldn't have been long before a hideous rumble tore me from my simple dreams. I burst my eyes open, hands shooting for the steering controls, only to see an eternal white light spread before all my vision, engulfing me, satisfying me, reaching deep inside me and twisting my heart like a dial on a clock.
It felt so surreal. My body became boundless and eternal, but so painfully present and concrete that I lurched up and gasped for breath and—
—was there, floating still among The Black. I had awoken, this time for certain, yet I had felt so odd. As though I was there stacked atop myself, pushing and pulling myself—I felt like tapered layers offset from one another, like an onion skin of my life was stuck to me.
I felt sick.
Some distressing sounds from my ship's console directed me toward a nearby station for emergency landing. I didn't like the thought, and would have rather idled in the drift than dock at some random station. But the system assured me it was a situation in need of immediate docking, and so it began to bring me toward the nearby station it and sent out a distress ping. The ping was returned with a haste unbecoming of stations so far out, and in turn my ship hastened its automatic docking procedure.
I had been so busy looking over the warning log, trying to figure out what the system was telling me was wrong with my ship, that I hadn't thought to look at the station. As we approached, I stole a glance and found it to be a considerable size for the Kronian Span. It appeared to be a repurposed Thradock Station, and was probably at one time abandoned and derelict. There were plenty such stations that came out of the wake of the Revelations War. Most tended to get adopted by some independent group and used for shelter. Or drugs. Once you're past the Asts there's not really any folk to bother you about the law.
The weird part of the station though, was the aftermarket structure at the end. It was a nine-pointed star circling around the station's tip, made of material I don't think I'd ever seen before. The architecture of the whole thing appeared foreign—hell, alien.
I had heard rumors about entire secret civilizations living out past the Jovian Span. Every reclaimer's heard those stories, and every reclaimer that's been far enough out to prove them's been able to refute the notion. Conspiracy garbage, I say, tabloid gossip. Just like any other rumor floating through The Black.
The station was near enough now that I could read the name emblazoned on its side: The Empyreus. Just another private station it seemed. Though it was nice of them to approve my emergency ping. And so quickly too. One might think it was a trap.
One might also be wise to keep their guard up.
The shifting metal floor gripped the wheels of my ship as I docked into one of the ports. My nerves were getting the best of me, I had to admit. As much as I wanted to, I couldn't just stay in the airlock and refuse to explain myself to the station owner. Being furtive like that was how you get yourself shot in The Black. Then again, so was being too forthcoming.
The port finished its pressurization before long and I was able to leave the ship. Through the port door I found myself in its airlock and could hear the familiar hissing of air from the room behind me. In a matter of moments the door at the far end of the room opened itself to me, and let me enter the station proper.
It was a mighty strange feeling there in the station. I was near the tail end—in fact the hatch for maintenance was only a few feet to my side—and had to propel myself along the main shaft for a while, passing by a pairs of airlock doors leading to other ports on every side of me. It was odd how many ships this station seemed to expect, being situated as far out as it was. Even with it being repurposed off what was gradually appearing to be one of the older models of Thradock Stations.
Perhaps I stumbled on a gambling den.
Floating up the main shaft, a soft music began to play, accompanied by the gentle rumble of voices. They were raucous, full of cheer.
Definitely a gambling den.
The sounds seemed to be coming from above, up a ladder that led—presumably—into the main living quarters of the ship; into the main ring that spun around the central shaft. When I was outside I noticed a broad, flat area to the ring. I assume that's where the music was coming from.
At the top of the ladder I was stopped. The ceiling above was moving in tandem with the rotation of the ring. Once I crossed its threshold, the centripetal force of the station would drag me the rest of the way.
I flipped myself upside down on the ladder. The floor was moving under my feet, but eventually a gap came by and let me funnel myself down so that I wouldn't miss the continuation of the ladder. Once my head was clear of the gap (I could tell you too many horror stories about the poor safety regulations of these old stations) I grabbed back on to the ladder and began climbing down.
Eventually, I could feel the centripetal force gripping my feet and pulling me down. And as I lowered, the music and voices grew in fervor.
At the bottom of the ladder, I turned around.
A veritable party was spread out all around me. It was impossible to believe, the room was magnificent! Polished hardwood floors spread out in every direction, stretching clear to the far end of the room where a massive window housed itself in the wall, offering a view of the nonagonal rings around the tip of the station. Marble pillars dotted the room. There were lavish curtains, an abundance of food and drink, and just to prove me right: both drugs and gambling. It was a den of pleasures and debauchery, where people were dressed to the nines and groomed to perfection.
They all looked much nicer than myself, who was standing there in the middle of the room with my mouth agape, dirty coveralls and messy hair making me stick out like a sore thumb.
Presently, someone noticed me and sauntered over, a martini sloshing to and fro in their hand.
“Hi there,” the gentleman said through pearly teeth. The way he spoke sounded aristocratic at best, belonging to a completely different echelon of society than I was used to. “You must be new here, you're looking a bit lost.”
“I'm fine,” I reassured him. Gin clung to his breath far more than I cared for. “I just had an emergency landing. I'd like to talk with whoever's in charge of the station just to clear some things up.”
“Ah!” The man spilled a little gin on the floor with his gesture, but he didn't seem drunk, just a little too enthusiastic. “You'll want to talk to Father D.” He cupped a hand to his mouth, and in a singsong tone bellowed: “Father D, you have a new guest!”
Embarrassment cascaded over me. Most people kept to their partying, but some stopped to look over. As it were, I would have appreciated as little eyes on my person as possible. Yet here I was, feeling like the belle of the ball. They might as well have cast a literal spotlight on me.
“Hello there,” a smooth voice chimed from behind me.
I turned around, only to be met with a handsome man appearing to still hold a glimmer of his youth, clad in classic black-tie attire, and staring at me through the most beautiful emerald eyes I had ever seen.
“My name is Father D,” he said with a bow. “Please, let me welcome you to The Empyreus.”
“Thank you for allowing me onto your station. My ship threw me some warning messages and proceeded to initiate an emergency landing. I just wanted to clear the air with you so you know what's up before I go back to fix my ship.”
“Oh there's no worries about that,” Father D chuckled. “We've already gotten to work fixing your ship. Our port diagnostics informed us of the situation. I'm just glad you were able to find your way up here without trouble. Come, join in the festivities while we repair your ship.”
Father D hooked his arm around mine. I wanted to pull away—I certainly didn't want any strangers touching my ship—but there was something about his charm. I couldn't resist. It was pretty lonely out in the Kronian Span, maybe a bit of social interaction would do me good, I thought. Help keep the mind sharp, keep the static at bay.
I decided to seize the opportunity and follow Father D to the bar. It wasn't often that free cocktails were provided to someone in my line of work, but when we approached, Father D made sure the bartender knew to put my drinks on his tab. And just like that, in a manner of seconds, I was sipping single-malt, 23rd century whisky.
“That's good stuff,” Father D said as he ordered himself a slender glass of plum-wine. “Pilfered from the Marisian Royal Family's cellar during that whole episode in the Terrisian Ring.” He sipped at his glass with delicate precision. “A bit heavier in flavor than I prefer, but it brings me joy to see another cherish it. Come, let's saunter down to the smoking room, that should give you a good bit's company and conversation while your ship is repaired.”
I thanked my generous host, but had to decline his offer. “I'm sorry, but I don't smoke. It lends the mind to the static, and in my line of work there's plenty of opportunity to become sick with it.”
“Ahh, you're worried about sersadin, yes?” Father D said, once more linking his arm into mine. My feet seemed to be swept along the floor. Impulses in my brain said not to continue on with the man, but I couldn't help it. It felt as though I had to, as if I already had done it. My mind dithered with the buzz of latency. The pre-dark French called it Déjà vu. Regardless, it made me feel uneasy.
“You needn't worry about such things,” Father D continued. “Sersadin is one of the few things prohibited on The Empyreus. But we've plenty of tobacco, cannabis, and assorted herbs for your smoking pleasure. There is even a man who keeps to his private quarters most times, of whom has a penchant for the diviner's sage. Pleasant fellow, that.”
Honestly, a few hits of cannabis—and if he said was true and there really was tobacco this far out—didn't sound half bad. And before I could even realize it, we were before the smoking room, Father D holding the door open wide.
Haze filled the air and my lungs as we meandered our way across the musty book-and-leather fragrance of the room.
“Gentleman,” Father D said to a group of individuals conversing around a group of plush leather chairs. “And dearest ladies,” he complimented with a smear of tonality. “I have a new associate of mine, a reclaimer. I'm sure she is more than capable of regaling you lot with her exploits.”
I took a seat among the people, sinking into the unending comfort of the chair. On the arm of the chair a spliff sat waiting for me, next to a press-lighter. I rested the drink in a cupholder on the other arm, pushed the end of the spliff into the lighter until I heard the signature click of the cylinder compression, and held it there till the cherry was lit. With a puff off the end and a sip of fine, royal whisky, I felt indulged to the highest degree.
“Enjoy yourself now.” Father D bowed to the group of us. “I'm afraid I must attend to other matters, I shall see you all around as it were.” A smirk, a nod, and he was gone. Wheeled around on his heel and walking with perfect poise back to the main room.
I introduced myself through drags of the spliff to the fine folks around me, just as they, in turn, did so to me. It was a varied collection of people: accountants, farmers, an executive, even a pro-athlete from Polaris. We all talked and talked and got to know each other quite well, and just as soon as you thought you had heard everything they had to say about themselves, you go and find out something new. The conversation was stimulating and relaxed. The spliff had long burnt down to the roach, and another one had found its way to the arm of the chair for a while, but I instead persisted with my drink, which upon inspection seemed to have been endless—perhaps my investment in the conversation was greater than I thought.
But then, as the well-dressed man to my left began waxing poetic about his time in the Terran Aeronautic Military, I was stricken by a familiar feeling. That sickening, dithering, lurch back from a forwards I've never been to.
I had heard this story before, hadn't I? He served in the TAM and he moved through the ranks, meeting his eventual wife in the service. And then he.. he...
“...and then of course when those red-rock bastards came lighting up the sky all bets were off, and I was shipped out to the Terrisian Ring for what would...”
Yes, that's right, he fought the Marisians. Became a war hero in the Terrisian Ring, and sailed off after a high priority target that was making its way for refuge in the Jovian colonies.
But what came after?
And besides, the Terrans didn't have any large-scale conflict with the Marisians for decades.
But the man himself looked barely a hair over thirty.
And how long had I spent there? There had been so much conversation.
But my drink was still full.
And when I went to drink it, it seemed endless.
But where was I?
Oh yes.
And he went to the Jovian Span to capture the target and aid in the war effort.
But the war had been over for decades.
And how long had I spent here? It felt like forever.
But my drink was still full.
And oh, now the well-dressed man to my left began waxing poetic.
But it was just about his time in the TAM.
I coughed into my hand. That was strange, there was blood. Powdery blood, bright red that began to oxidize and grow ever more brown before my eyes. I coughed again. It was harsh and granular, like sersadin.
But I had never smoked sersadin in my life. It was what gave you the static.
I needed to get up, find some medical help, maybe Father D.
Oh, but my drink was still full.
Still full.
I—
I don't feel so good.
Static covered my vision, it filled my nose and my ears and textured my brain into a writhing mass of the stuff. And then, as suddenly as it must have arrived: clarity.
How long had I been there?
I shot out of my seat, the world was losing its color. It grew pockmarked, shifting, oscillating between then and when and now, and it was all one but for the singular moment—for a singular moment was all it was.
My legs faltered, my body clamored back for the chair. But I pressed on. It was addiction—instinct. But I pressed on.
I pressed on, because my drink was still full—but the man to my left had begun to wax poetic.
Why now? Why begin speaking now as the console of my ship blares its warning sounds?
I sipped at my drink, and tasted from it a static of bloody conversation.
But there I was, before me.
The smoking room was behind me.
The main room felt so similar, but so different. And there was so many people. So congested! Where had these people been before? And what were the strange clothes they wore? What were these tongues?
There, I thought, spotting the ladder where I first entered. I decided I had had enough, it was time to leave.
But while getting to the ladder was easy, I could only climb it so far. The centripetal mechanism had stopped and I couldn't access the rest of the ladder. In effect, I was stuck.
I descended the ladder, back into the main room (and worked so tirelessly to stop myself from spilling my drink—it was still quite full you know), and searched hard for any sign of Father D. The color loss of my vision was near complete. Everything seemed awash in black and white, and the visual dither only grew with each breath.
At last I spotted Father D, and went to confront him. He was showing a young man around, a fellow reclaimer by the look of his clothes—though even they seemed fancier and better equipped for the job than what I was wearing. I stole a glance at his eyes, and in those youthful pools I witnessed a spasm of time set within boundless effervescence.
“Hey, Father D!” I shouted. Several people turned to look at me, perplexed by the sudden outcry. Perhaps they were confused by the hint of negative emotion in my voice. Everyone else had been so happy, so sedated. How could anybody not be enjoying themselves aboard The Empyreus?
I got in Father D's face, and ripped him away from the boy. “Explain this. All of this.”
Father D wore a perplexed expression. “I haven't the faintest understanding of what you mean, ma'am.” He wrenched my hand from his collar, dusted himself off. “This is The Empyreus, same as it has ever been. A cozy, welcoming place. A party neverending. You look stressed. Please, let me escort you to the smoking room—”
As he reached for me, I lurched back. The movement seemed to catch him unaware and knock him off balance, so I capitalized on the moment, and sent four of my best knuckles arcing upwards into his chin.
Father D flew back and landed on the floor.
People who saw it stared frozen in terror. Completely frozen, as though captured in a snapshot out of time.
Father D got to his feet, rubbing his chin. The soft, sultry tone of his voice gave way to the grumbling defiance of adolescence.
“You want this explained?” He looked at me, and there was malice in his eyes. “I have done you a service. I have saved you.”
“Saved me? Saved me from what? I want to leave.
“Then do it,” he growled. His impatience was making itself known along his brow.
I had to resist the urge to hit him again. “I tried and I couldn't. Fix it, and let me go home.”
“You just aren't getting it, are you?” He said, and his eyes burned like green fire. “You can't leave, you are home. You're stuck here. You've always been stuck here.”
“The Hell I am, I'm leaving this station whether or not you want to have a say in the matter.” I turned around, but after only a few steps, I froze. I felt just as everyone else in the room who had been captured in still-life.
“I'm sorry,” Father D sighed, replacing the malice on his tongue with a sincere sorrow. “I can't have you break the loop. You have been infected, become a beacon of sorts. I can't let you catch back up with yourself, and you must understand when I tell you this, but you would not be thankful to do so. You are not under your roof, but you are with your senses. You are home. The Empyreus is your home, now.
The static in my vision had reduced everything to vague shapes. My senses were fizzling out, feeling stretched across my whole life, compressed all into one.
“I promise it's easier this way,” he said, and reached into his pocket where he retrieved a device that held only a single button. He pressed the button down hard, held it for a moment, and out the large central window I could see the great nonagonal rings begin to move and spin. They spun faster and faster, till the blurred shapes within my vision became a single ring of motion. A perfect loop without beginning or end, where forward did not preclude backwards. It was effigy; the fortune of the infinite.
Then there came a sound that pierced even the hideous blank of space.
And there followed only light.
But it was okay, because there was nothing to worry about. I was in a comfy chair, with good company.
And my drink was still full.
